Escaping the swing of outrage
The Exploit
Outrage is the engine of engagement. Systems push you between extremes — outrage at A, then outrage at B, then outrage at A again. You swing, exhausted, never stable, never effective. “He who lives by the sword dies by the sword. He who lives by outrage dies by outrage.”
The Counter-Hack
Step off the pendulum. Don’t swing. Don’t react to every provocation. The Pendulum node is about finding the still point while the world oscillates around you.
The Practice
The 24-hour rule — No reaction to outrage-inducing content for 24 hours The both-sides check — What’s the strongest version of the other view? The energy audit — Is this outrage worth your energy? The action test — Will this outrage lead to action or just more scrolling?
In the Dopamine Circus
The algorithm feeds you alternating outrages to keep you engaged. The Pendulum node teaches you to recognize the swing and step off. The metric: How often are you outraged? Daily = you’re on the pendulum.
Relation to Cognition
Affect Heuristic — Outrage colors judgment Recency Bias — The latest outrage dominates Availability Heuristic — Loud outrages feel important
The Whisper
“I will not swing. I will not be swung.” The pendulum swings whether you watch or not. Look away. Stand still. ⚖️
