Recognizing gradual capture
The Exploit
The most dangerous changes are gradual. You don’t notice drift — one degree at a time, until you’re far from where you intended. Systems prefer gradual capture; it’s less noticeable than sudden seizure. “The boiling frog doesn’t notice the temperature rising.”
The Counter-Hack
Survey your position. Regularly check: Where am I? Where did I intend to be? The Drift node is about noticing the gap between trajectory and intention before it becomes a chasm.
The Practice
The weekly survey — Where did my time go this week? The intention check — Am I doing what I said I would? The values audit — Do my actions match my stated values? The compass reading — Am I heading where I want to go?
In the Dopamine Circus
Drift is the default. The Drift node teaches you to navigate deliberately. The metric: How different is your life from 6 months ago? Was that intentional?
Relation to Cognition
Status Quo Bias — Accepting current state Change Blindness — Not noticing gradual change Normalcy Bias — Assuming things will stay the same
The Whisper
“I check my bearings. I correct my course.” The drift is invisible until it isn’t. Check your position. Navigate. 🧭
From the Manuscript
Marginalia — Dr. Voss
I think about ten years constantly now. What will the North Platte flock be in 2036? What will I be? The parakeets plan in seasons. The crows plan in years. We plan in minutes. No wonder they are winning.
