TIER 4 (Ongoing): The Black List (monthly subscription)

Strategy: Submit to Tier 1 with your best script. Use feedback to revise. Submit to Tier 2 with revised script. Mention placements in Tier 1 queries. Repeat.

IF YOU DON’T PLACE

It’s not the script—it might be:

  • Timing (wrong year for that concept)
  • Readership (not every reader connects)
  • Competition (4,000 Nicholl entries, 5 winners)

Next steps:

  1. Get notes (Black List, WeScreenplay, or consultant)
  2. Revise based on patterns in feedback
  3. Submit revised version next year
  4. Write TALLY—multiple samples demonstrate career
  5. Query agents anyway—contests aren’t the only path

Remember:

  • Diablo Cody sold JUNO without contest placements
  • Tarantino didn’t win contests—he made connections
  • The path is never linear
