Node 02: The Mirror
Recognizing self in the system’s reflection
The Exploit
Systems personalize. The feed shows you yourself — your interests, your biases, your fears reflected back as “content.” You don’t see the world; you see a mirror designed to keep you looking.
“The algorithm knows you better than you know yourself.”
The Counter-Hack
See the mirror as mirror.
Recognize when you’re looking at yourself rather than at reality. The reflection is accurate but incomplete — it’s you, but it’s not the world. Break the mirror to see beyond.
The Practice
- The stranger test — Would this surprise someone from 100 years ago? From another culture?
- The disagreement check — Do people you respect disagree? If not, you’re in a mirror hall.
- The random injection — Deliberately consume content outside your profile
- The source audit — Who benefits from you seeing this?
In the Dopamine Circus
The algorithmic feed is a perfect mirror — it shows you exactly what engages you. But engagement is not truth. The Mirror node teaches you to recognize the reflection and look away.
The metric: How much of your feed is predictable? If 100%, you’re trapped.
Relation to Cognition
- Confirmation Bias — The mirror confirms
- Filter Bubble — The mirror creates the bubble
- Availability Heuristic — The mirror makes some things too available
The Whisper
“This is not for me. This is me.”
Break the glass. Step through. 🪞
