Affect Heuristic

Type: Cognitive Bias
Local HTML: affect_heuristic.html

Definition

Making decisions based on current emotional state rather than objective analysis. β€œHow do I feel about this?” replaces β€œWhat do I think about this?”

Your gut reaction β€” positive or negative β€” becomes the entire basis for judgment.

Why It Matters

Investing: You buy stocks that feel good, sell when scared. Both are usually wrong. Politics: Candidates evaluated on charisma, not policy. Products: Pretty packaging beats better functionality. People: First impressions based on vibe, not substance.

The Mechanism

  1. Emotional tag β€” Experience triggers feeling
  2. Feeling = evaluation β€” Good/bad judgment attached
  3. Rationalization follows β€” You construct reasons after the fact
  4. Persistence β€” Emotional tags stick, even when wrong

Examples

  • Air travel: Fear of crashes (vivid) vs safety statistics (boring)
  • Nuclear power: Feels dangerous, statistically very safe
  • Vaccines: Feels risky, overwhelmingly beneficial
  • Job interviews: β€œI just clicked with them” β€” affect heuristic at work

Fighting It

  1. Sleep on it β€” Emotions fade, analysis remains
  2. Pre-commit to criteria β€” Decide before feeling
  3. Seek data β€” What do the numbers say?
  4. Consider opposite β€” β€œWhat if I felt the opposite?”

  • [[Availability Heuristic** β€” Emotional events are available
  • [[Halo Effect** β€” Positive affect spreads
  • [[Risk Perception** β€” Dread risks feel worse than mundane risks
