Definition
Becoming dependent on a specific technology, vendor, or standard to the point where switching costs become prohibitive. A specific form of path dependence.
The QWERTY problem: We use a suboptimal keyboard layout because switching is too costly.
Why It Matters
Technology: iOS vs Android ecosystems — apps, data, habits lock you in. Software: Proprietary file formats, cloud services, subscription models. Standards: USB-C finally winning after decades of incompatible cables. Economics: Network effects create natural monopolies.
Types of Lock-in
| Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | Incompatible standards | File formats, protocols |
| Contractual | Legal obligations | Service contracts, leases |
| Benefits | Loyalty programs | Airline miles, credit cards |
| Information | Data trapped | Cloud storage, proprietary DBs |
| Network | Everyone uses it | Social media, messaging apps |
Fighting It
As a user:
- Prefer open standards
- Keep data portable
- Avoid deep ecosystem integration
As a society:
- Antitrust enforcement
- Mandate interoperability
- Support open standards
