Lock-in Effect

Type: Systems & Dynamics
Local HTML: lock_in_effect.html

Definition

Becoming dependent on a specific technology, vendor, or standard to the point where switching costs become prohibitive. A specific form of path dependence.

The QWERTY problem: We use a suboptimal keyboard layout because switching is too costly.

Why It Matters

Technology: iOS vs Android ecosystems — apps, data, habits lock you in. Software: Proprietary file formats, cloud services, subscription models. Standards: USB-C finally winning after decades of incompatible cables. Economics: Network effects create natural monopolies.

Fighting It

As a user:

  • Prefer open standards
  • Keep data portable
  • Avoid deep ecosystem integration

As a society:

  • Antitrust enforcement
  • Mandate interoperability
  • Support open standards

  • [[Path Dependence** — Early choices constrain later ones
  • [[Status Quo Bias** — Preferring current state
  • [[Sunk Cost Fallacy** — Invested in current system
