Definition
Direct stimulation of pleasure centers, bypassing natural rewards. Named for the wire rats would press to stimulate their brains, ignoring food and water until they starved.
Modern wireheading: drugs, social media, gambling, pornography — all superstimuli hijacking ancient reward circuits.
Why It Matters
Individual: Addiction, anhedonia (can’t enjoy normal things), destroyed motivation Societal: Entire populations distracted by dopamine triggers Civilizational: What if AI offers wireheading? Do we choose pleasure or purpose?
Pleasure without purpose is a trap. The rat doesn’t know why it keeps pressing the lever.
